Born in Pepeekeo, Hawaii.

1944
Takes sculpture lessons with Carl Massa

1945-47
Works at ceramic production facility in wood-working mill;
meets ceramist and teacher Claude Horan there

1947-49
Saturday classes at Honolulu Art School;
studies with Louis Pohl and Ralston Crawford

1948-51
Attends University of Hawaii. Studies clay with Claude Horan,
design with Bert Carpenter, weaving with Hester Robinson

1949-51
Teachers adult education evening classes at Honolulu YWCA.
Teachers part-time at Manoa grade school, Honolulu

1951-54
Attends Cranbrook Academy of Art Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Studies clay with Maija Grotell, sculpture with Bill Mcvey,
weaving with Marianne Strengell

1952
Receives student award for best clay student. Receives Mclnerny
Foundation grant with provision to teach in Hawaii at later
time 1953 Becomes assistant to Maija Grotell

1954
Teaches summer sessions at Cranbrook Academy of Art

1954-55
Teaches at University of Wisconsin (Madison) Art Department
as sabbatical replacement for Harvey Littleton

1955-56
Eight-month trip to Japan. Visit folk potters, including Hamada,
Rosanjin and Kaneshige; invited to work in Kaneshige studio

1955-64
Faculty member and head of ceramic department at Cleveland
Institute of Art.

1957
Participates in Asilomar, first annual conference of
the American Craftsmen's Council

1958-59
Teaches at Honolulu Academy of Art in fulfillment of Mclnerny
Foundation grant received in 1951

Receives Founder's Society Purchase Prize, Michigan Artist Show
